Ohio State (2-0) vs. Indiana (2-0) Game Preview
Why Ohio State Will Win
The offense that was a slight question and concern a few weeks ago couldn’t be sharper to start the season.
Beating Florida Atlantic isn’t anything special, but whacking around a Cincinnati team that shut down UCLA to a dead stop was impressive. More than that, the team appeared to get up to speed in a hurry.
Justin Fields has been close to perfect, the receiving corps has been outstanding, and at least against the Bearcats, JK Dobbins was able to breakout. Indiana has a solid offense, but if and when the Buckeyes get rolling and this gets into a shootout, they’re better equipped.
To pull this off, the Indiana defense has to force a slew of OSU mistakes, but that’s not happening. The Hoosiers don’t take the ball away with just one takeaway in the first two games.
Why Indiana Will Win
The Indiana passing game can work against the Buckeyes.
There wasn’t much happening from Desmond Ridder and the Cincinnati passing game last week, but Indiana has the ability to bomb away. It’s connecting on the deep passes, the passing game is the second-most efficient so far among Big Ten teams, and there are real, live weapons for the OSU defense to worry about.
It was only Eastern Illinois, but Penix was able to connect well enough to spread the ball around – he hasn’t shown off his dual-threat ability quite yet – and Peyton Ramsey stepped in and hit 13-of-14 throws.
The Hoosiers have to be able to control the clock and keep Fields off the field. The Buckeyes can strike quickly, but the offense hasn’t faced a lick of adversity yet. IU has to put the pressure on right away.
What’s Going To Happen
The Buckeyes are 25-0-1 going back to 1988 in the series and have won 24 in a row – but they’ll be in for a fight.
Indiana will get the offense going early on with a few good scoring drives, Fields will be off just enough to think that the upset might be brewing, and then … kaboom.
The Buckeye explosion will come late in the third quarter to break the game open, Indiana will press, make mistakes, and the score will become far more lopsided than the game will be.
