Notre Dame (2-1) vs. Virginia (4-0) Game Preview
Why Virginia Will Win
The Notre Dame running game is still just okay.
It did a nice job against Louisville, didn’t get any home runs from the running backs against New Mexico, and was held to a dead stop by Georgia last week. Tony Jones is the leading rusher, and he was held to just 38 yards over the last two weeks.
This isn’t the game for the Irish rushing attack to start to find its home run hitting groove again.
Virginia’s defensive front is fantastic at getting into the backfield – it leads all ACC teams in tackles for loss and leads the nation in sacks – and the linebacking corps is eating everything up. So far, the nation’s 12th-best run defense hasn’t allowed a 100-yard running game and is giving up just 2.2 yards per carry.
The problems on the ground are leading to problems moving the chains. The Irish aren’t hitting their third down tries – only hitting 29% of their tries – and they’re only controlling the clock for 26 minutes per game.
Why Notre Dame Will Win
The Irish receiving corps has to give the Cavalier secondary problems.
Ian Book is never going to be Tua Tagovailoa, but he’s efficient, he’ll move, and he’s able to get the ball to his big targets. He’s a quarterback who knows how to get things done, and – despite all the problems with the ground game – almost pulled the Georgia game out of the fire last week.
Florida State was able to throw well against the Cavaliers, and Old Dominion gave them a whole slew of problems. This week, it’s up to Chase Claypool and the fabulous tight end tandem of Cole Kmet and Tommy Tremble to attack down the field and open things up a bit.
Virginia doesn’t do enough to take the ball away, and it’s not going to start picking off Book on the 50/50 passes to his big targets. Expect the Irish to be a +2 in turnover margin.
What’s Going To Happen
Virginia has the right mix to beat the Irish on the road.
Bryce Perkins is a tough veteran quarterback who can do a little bit of everything, the defensive front should be able to get to Book on a consistent basis – something Georgia wasn’t able to do – and most importantly in this game, the O should control the clock.
Blow off the close call to Old Dominion last week. Virginia is one of those teams that has a style that’s not spectacular or jazz-hands, but is able to be steadily solid under Bronco Mendenhall.
Notre Dame will have a few key chances late, but it simply won’t have the ball enough to get the running game moving.
