New Mexico (1-0) vs. Notre Dame (1-0) Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

Just what kind of inspiration will there be among the team with head coach Bob Davie not making the trip after what he described as a serious health scare?

Offensive line coach Saga Tuitele will take over for this week, and he’s bringing a rest team with a dangerous enough offense to make this interesting.

The Lobos have a whole slew of quarterbacks ready to work into the mix to try keeping the Irish off-balance.

Tevaka Tuioti is the best quarterback, but he’s been out with a slew of issues – including missing time after a death in the family – but Brandt Hughes and Sheriron Jones each made the offense move in the win over Sam Houston State. Hughes is out, but the coaching staff will still play around with the options.

It’s a quirky offense with enough explosion to push the ball deep – averaging 19 yards per completion in Week 1 – but the whole goal is to open things up for the running game. There’s just enough deception going on to keep the Notre Dame linebackers guessing, but …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish offense should be able to do whatever it wants to.

Notre Dame has had two weeks off since the win over Louisville, and now it gets a Lobo secondary that got lit up by Sam Houston State for 443 yards and big play after big play.

Ian Book didn’t turn it loose in the sloppy opener, but he threw for 193 yards as part of a balanced attack that took over after the first quarter. The offensive line was fine, but it didn’t blast away like it was supposed to. It will this week.

The New Mexico defensive front lost its best player – defensive tackle Aaron Blackwell – in the interior, and now a tough situation becomes way too thin.

What’s Going To Happen

This was supposed to be Bob Davie’s return to South Bend, but he won’t get to enjoy the fun. New Mexico will get the offense going in the first half, but it won’t be nearly enough to offset the rested Irish offense that will pound away for well over 300 rushing yards.
