Michigan (2-1) vs. Rutgers (1-2) Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

It might have been a horrible, horrible day in Madison in the 35-14 loss to Wisconsin, but there’s a good chance the Badgers are really just that good.

The Wolverines couldn’t get their passing game going until it was way too late, but the signs were there of what should be coming. The big receivers were able to win their share of battles against the Badger defensive backs, but the O just wasn’t able to click against a team playing the highest of levels.

This week, though, it’s about getting nasty on the lines. The most galling part about the loss last week was how Wisconsin treated the Wolverine lines like roadkill.

There’s no Jonathan Taylor on Rutgers – even though it was his other option out of high school – and the Knights can’t get past the 78-yard mark over the last few weeks. That means the passing game has to work. It’ll be come up with a few big plays – the O has hit 300 yards in two of its three games – but the Michigan secondary is better than anything Rutgers has dealt with so far.

Why Rutgers Will Win

Michigan … is … a … mess.

The talent is there, but the defense couldn’t come up with a meaningful stop against the Badgers. The offense has the experience, but its new style isn’t working with a whole lot of slop and no running game to rely on.

Dylan McCaffrey is likely out after suffering a huge hit in Madison, and Shea Patterson is far from 100% after getting beaten up.

The passing game can’t find any consistency, there are way too many mistakes, too many turnovers – nine so far – and the ground attack doesn’t have the live bodies to pick up the slack.

For all of Rutgers’ problems, the offensive line leads the Big Ten in fewest sacks and tackles for loss allowed. Michigan has no pass rush, it has no fight into the backfield, and overall, the team is going to be pressing way, way, way too hard after a few weeks of negative pub.

What’s Going To Happen

If you want to look thin, hang out with fat people.

If you want to get over a miserable performance in college football and need to feel better about yourself, you play Rutgers.

It’s not going to be the cathartic moment Michigan fans might be looking for, but the defense is going to try to beat Wisconsin by taking it out on the Scarlet Knights.

This week, the defense will start to do far more behind the line, and the offensive side will start to be a bit more efficient. Rutgers will score early to freak everyone out and get social media rolling, and the everything will kick in.
