Michigan (1-0) vs. Army (1-0) Game Preview
Why Army Will Win
The running game won’t be that mediocre again.
It sort of worked against Rice, and it was able to keep control of the game to a point, but it didn’t show off the normal explosion or pop it expected against such a mediocre team. It’s the style and the system – when it’s working, it’s the type of curveball that’s sometimes impossible to hit no matter how good the talent on the other side.
Army can hit, and it doesn’t give up many big plays – Rice got one huge run, and that was it – but this is a game about patience for the Wolverines, and they might not have it if they start to get frustrated if they don’t have control.
Against Middle Tennessee, Michigan had the ball for over 33 minutes. That’s not going to happen this week. However …
Why Michigan Will Win
The run defense really is that good.
How do you stop the Army option attack? You need fast linebackers who can stay in their lanes and stay in their spots. The Knights aren’t going to be able to run up the gut on the Michigan defensive tackles, and good luck getting outside against this group.
The Wolverines held Middle Tennessee to just 67 rushing yards with Khaleke Hudson leadings the way with eight tackles, Expect him to come up with at least 15 stops as the Michigan defense forces long third down chance after long third down chance.
Get Army into 3rd-and-5ish, and you have it in big, big trouble.
On the other side, the Army secondary is about to be in for a long day. Shea Patterson might have been dogged a bit on social media – and, reportedly, by the fans at times – but he had a solid 17-of-29 day for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He’ll get time, and he should be able to fire at will. But …
What’s Going To Happen
Get ready for Michigan to give Army a taste of its own medicine, at least a little bit, with Dylan McCaffrey being a factor as he pounds away a bit with the Michigan ground attack.
Army will be a whole lot sharper than it was against Rice – the Knights looked like they needed the tune-up – but the slow drip of its offense won’t be able to compare to the deep plays from the Wolverine offense.
Expect a frustrating first half for Michigan and Patterson, but it’ll all start to click just when the world – especially Twitter – starts to dive in deep.
