Marshall (1-0) vs. Boise State (1-0) Game Preview
Why Marshall Will Win
Marshall’s defense won’t buckle like Florida State’s did.
This is a very good, very sound Thundering Herd D that should generate the same sort of pass rush FSU was able to, only without getting powered over for so many hard yards.
VMI isn’t Boise State, but last week the Herd got their tune-up, holding the Keydets to just 56 rushing yards helped by a huge week from a stout defensive front that kept getting behind the line when needed.
The offense did whatever it wanted to, too – Isaiah Green threw a pick, but he also tossed four touchdown passes, the running game averaged over six yards per carry, and everything clicked in the 56-17 win – most of VMI’s points came when the game away effectively over.
This is a good enough team to win the Conference USA title with a strong enough secondary to keep Mr. Bachmeier from going off like he did in Tallahassee.
Why Boise State Will Win
Freshman QB Hank Bachmeier got most of the love and attention after throwing for over 400 yards in the win over FSU, but Robert Mahone’s 142 yards and two touchdowns on the ground set the tone.
This is a tough, physical Boise State offensive line that should be able to pound a bit on the Herd. The balance is there to keep things moving in a variety of ways, but the key is Bachmeier. He held up under the pressure of the FSU D, the heat, and the moment to pull off the win.
Now, Boise State looks like the type of team that could end up in the New Year’s Six. But it has to get out to a hot start. There’s a difference between dealing with VMI, and handling Boise State on in Boise on a Friday night. Marshall will need to find the offensive consistency to keep up.
What’s Going To Happen
Be careful. The assumption is that Boise State will own this from the start, but it struggled against Florida State for a half, and it took a collapse from the other side to pull this off. Give credit to the Broncos for the win, but it was a wee bit overblown … maybe.
Marshall has the make-up and the talent to pull off the shocker. At the very least, it’s going to come into the road game with the “no one believes in us” attitude, and the defense to back it up. The Broncos will survive after controlling the clock in the second half, but they’ll be in for a four quarter fight.
