Louisville (1-1) vs. Western Kentucky (1-1) Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The defense has been fine so far. Granted, it played Central Arkansas and FIU, but so far the pressure in the backfield has been there and the run defense was terrific. Louisville has improved, but it’s hardly a finely-tuned machine – a little pressure in the backfield can throw it off.

The offense might not be scoring enough, but the attack is at least moving the ball.

The Hilltoppers are hitting their third down plays, the offensive line is giving everyone time to work, and the offense is hanging on to the ball for over 34 minutes. Overall, the results might not seem like they’re there – WKU was the only FBS team to lose to an FCS team in Week One – but they really are playing better than last season.

Speaking of playing better …

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals might have lost to Notre Dame to kick things off, and they might have had big problems hanging on to the ball, but they were competitive again. Last week, they stretched their legs a bit in the 42-0 win over Eastern Kentucky.

The offense has playmakers. Jawon Pass is a veteran now who’s spreading the ball around well, the ground game showed off a little bit of its explosion last week with 322 yards, and the pass rush has been fantastic.

WKU might be okay, but it still doesn’t have the speed and pop to keep up if the Cardinals get up early. Take an early lead, turn the pass rush loose, and home the turnovers aren’t there like they were against the Irish – the formula should work.

What’s Going To Happen

This is where Louisville started to look the part – at least, it’ll do that against an FBS team. After winning just two games last season – with one of them coming in a shaky 20-17 game against the Hilltoppers – this time around the Cardinals will start out 2-1 with a more emphatic, confidence-inspring performance.
