Louisville (2-1) vs. Florida State (1-2) Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

It’s time for the offense to eat.

The Florida State defense has talent, athleticism, and a whole lot to like. It’s also a total disaster when it comes to try to stop other teams from scoring points.

It’s been ugly from halftime of the opener against Boise State on, ranking dead last among ACC teams in third down conversion percentage, dead last in pass defense, dead last in scoring defense, and it owning the worst defense in America in first downs allowed.

Again, there’s enough talent to do a lot more, and the pass rush has been a positive, but this group can’t seem to come up with a meaningful stop, and that’s where the Cardinal offense comes in.

The attack has been good so far at coming up with big pass plays – leading all ACC teams in yards per completion – and it’s cranking up the rushing game with 210 yards or more in each of the first three games. The Cardinals ran for 199 yards or more just five times all of last year.

Why Florida State Will Win

James Blackman continues to have a fantastic season.

If there’s a bright spot, it’s the play of the Seminole backfield with Blackman hitting 68% of his passes with nine touchdowns and just two picks. He’s doing a nice job, Cam Akers has rushed for 387 yards and three scores with two receiving touchdowns, and the offense overall has been far better than it was throughout last season.

It’s just not good enough to keep up with the defensive problems.

Even with the meltdowns on D, the Noles are still are really, really close to being 3-0 instead of 1-2. Okay, so that’s how things work and the team has to start winning those tight games against good teams, but losing to Boise State and Virginia this year isn’t that bad.

Louisville might be playing better than it did throughout last season, but it’s still not great at steadily connecting with the passing game, and it’ll give the ball up enough to be a problem. FSU could use the breaks.

What’s Going To Happen

Finally, Florida State will win a game that doesn’t require a whole slew of dramatics.

It’s going to be a fight to get by and finish this off, but the defense will get into the Cardinal backfield just enough to be disruptive, and Blackman and Akers will go off to set a face early pace in the shootout. It’ll hardly be a perfect performance, and a late UofL score will make it a wee bit interesting, but for now, 2-2 with a win will look just fine to FSU fans no matter what.
