Louisville (0-1) vs. Eastern Kentucky (1-0) Game Preview

Why Eastern Kentucky Will Win

The Colonels have a dangerous offense with a whole lot of interesting parts for the running game.

The Louisville defense is better. It held up reasonably well against the Irish offensive line, but now it has to get ready to deal with a whole lot of flash on the ground.

Coming off a short week following their Monday night loss to Notre Dame, the Cardinals gave up 230 rushing yards and four scores to the Irish. EKU ripped off 333 yards averaging close to nine yards per carry in its 53-7 win over Valparaiso, with Alonzo Booth leading the way with 128 yards and three scores on just seven carries.

There were way, way, WAY too many missed opportunities for the Cardinals in the loss. If they’re still not sharp, and if they turn the ball over three times again, the Colonels should keep this close.

Why Louisville Will Win

There were way, way, WAY too many missed opportunities for the Cardinals in the loss – that’s a plus.

It wasn’t just a battle with Notre Dame, but it was Week 1 under a new coaching staff. It’s going to take some time to adjust.

The running game worked – averaging over five yards per carry – the passing game was simply off more than it was as awful as the raw numbers, and with a little bit sharper all-around play, this looked like a team that can a whole lot better and stronger.

The Cardinal defensive line should get into the backfield just enough to bother the EKU running game, and even though this isn’t an elite program and team quite yet, it’s not Valparaiso – the O will come up with more than 184 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

Louisville will need a little while to wake up, but they’ll explode in the second half to pull away. There will be some drama – EKU could be leading at halftime – but the Cardinals will put it all together in time to win relatively easily, at least by the final score. They’ll have to play all four quarters, though.
