Kansas State (2-0) vs. Mississippi State (2-0) Game Preview
Why Kansas State Will Win
The Wildcats have been fabulous so far on both sides of the ball.
They haven’t played anyone with a pulse – Nicholls and Bowling Green – but being dominant against bad teams wasn’t a given for the program last year, struggling to get by South Dakota by three to start out and showing no consistency from game to game.
Skylar Thompson took target practice against Bowling Green, Ball State transfer James Gilbert has been a perfect fit for the running game, and everything has been a smoothly efficient machine. The O is third in the nation on third downs, the D leads college football in third down stops, and just about everything has been terrific.
It’s not the same for Mississippi State, who’s still trying to rebuild the defense back to its 2018 form, and needs QB Tommy Stevens to be back and healthy after having a shoulder injury problem.
Why Mississippi State Will Win
Stevens is supposedly fine, and he’s coming off a brilliant 9-of-10 performance – before getting hurt – against a terrific Southern Miss defense.
The offense is starting to find its groove, utilizing the backfield talent a bit more with Kylin Hill getting out to a great start to the season, rushing for 123 yards and a score with several big runs last week.
Mississippi State’s one big issue offensively so far has been the pass protection, even though the running game is working, but for all of the good things Kansas State has done so far, the pass rush hasn’t been there.
How much will field position matter? Bulldog punter Tucker Day has been fantastic so far, while Kansas State’s punting game hasn’t done much so far – it hasn’t had to.
What’s Going To Happen
On a day full of light games, this one will be one of the stars.
Kansas State will come up with a far better effort and a far better performance than last year’s 31-10 loss at home to the Bulldogs. MSU has had had to work a wee bit more so far, and it’s been able to come through. Kansas State hasn’t had to sweat.
The Wildcat execution will be sharp enough to make it a four quarter fight on the road against a solid SEC team, but Stevens will be decent enough when he has to be to go on a few late scoring drives – K-State won’t generate enough pressure.
