Florida State (1-1) vs. Virginia (2-0) Game Preview
Why Florida State Will Win
It’s so frustrating because it’s there.
The Seminoles showed in the first half against both Boise State and ULM that they’ve got the pieces to explode and be terrific – if that’s possible after allowing well over 1,000 yards of offense in two games and needing overtime to get past a Sun Belt team.
As crazy as it sounds after all the problems so far, when they’re on, they look like one of the few ACC teams with the athleticism and upside to give Clemson a real, live test.
It’s not just RB Cam Akers, QB James Blackman, and all of the offensive pop. The defensive side has occasionally looked and played the part as well, and now it has former USF head coach and defensive guru Jim Leavitt coming in as part of the coaching staff to try fixing the glitch.
In a team-is-half-full sort of way, it took two epic comebacks by solid offenses to create the uses over the last two weeks. At some point, the team will be hydrated enough to put together a decent fourth quarter. But until then …
Why Virginia Will Win
Okay, enough. Florida State is just a good old-fashioned hot mess defensively.
It can’t come up with a meaningful third down stop, the secondary is getting lit up like a Christmas tree, and overall, it just looks out of shape. This team was gassed at the end of the first two games.
Throw in the ongoing issues on the offensive line and the ridiculous penalty problem, and this is the perfect opponent for the razor-sharp Cavaliers.
Bryce Perkins and the O lead all ACC teams in third down stops, the team has been flagged a way-low six times, and the four turnovers haven’t been that big a deal.
Basically, Virginia is playing well, and Florida State isn’t. But it might be easier than that.
It’s supposed to be around 85 in Charlottesville during the game. Virginia dominates in time of possession, and FSU can’t sustain a drive to save its defense. And that’s why …
What’s Going To Happen
The Noles will melt down in the fourth quarter again – their D will be on the field for too long.
The FSU offense will have its moments, and it’ll make this more interesting than expected for just over a half. And then Perkins and company will go on two long, sustained drives, and the Cavs will be 2-0 in the ACC.
