Florida State (2-2) vs. NC State (3-1) Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The Wolfpack have to figure out right away what’s working on offense and keep hammering away with it.

The FSU defense might be okay against the run, but it can be pounded on if someone wants to commit to it. But for NC State, it’s time to crank up the attack against a defense that’s getting hit for too many big plays and can be picked apart by an efficient, mid-range passer.

Matt McKay is still growing into the job, and while he has only thrown one pick so far and has thrown for 200 yards or more in three of his four starts, he hasn’t turned it loose quite yet.

No defense in the country allows more first downs than FSU’s, and no team holds on to the ball for a shorter period of time, keeping it for under 24 minutes a game. As long as McKay and the offense can keep the chains moving, and if the defense can continue to be good at getting off the field, boring and safe should be okay.

Why Florida State Will Win

The offense continues to work. Cam Akers in in the midst of a great year as one of the ACC’s best running backs, and the passing game made a decent pivot to backup and former Wisconsin starter Alex Hornibrook after James Blackman went down.

A good veteran who has been through the big game wars, Hornibrook hit 75% of his throws for 255 yards and two scores in the win over Louisville. The offense is moving, and the defense – for all of its problems – can get into the backfield and bother McKay.

This isn’t a dangerous or efficient NC State offense. It’s fine, and again, it should be able to get by and potentially pull this off if it controls the game, but FSU isn’t going to start turning the ball over, and it’ll be able to throw if it needs to. NC State hasn’t been able to bomb away quite yet.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Florida State, so the game will be close, tight, and can go either way.

Hornibrook will hit the throws he needs to, and the running game will get moving. Yes, the NC State run defense is statistically strong, but it hasn’t faced a back like Akers. The one time it did face a team with a halfway decent ground game was against West Virginia, it got hit for over six yards per carry.

The Nole defense will keep both teams in the game, but the FSU offensive backfield will have a bigger game than NC State’s.
