FIU (1-2) at Louisiana Tech (2-1) Game Preview
Why FIU Will Win
Eventually this will click. This team is a whole lot better than it’s played over the first three weeks, but it needs to find a little offensive consistency, and the defense has to stop letting teams fire at will.
The Golden Panthers aren’t turning the ball over – just two giveaways so far – and they’re not getting flagged enough to matter. They’re not doing the little things wrong, but they have to step up when it comes to the big things – like scoring.
Louisiana Tech can’t move the ball a lick on third downs, it’s getting flagged, and it’s turning the ball over a wee bit much. In other words, it’s making the mistakes that FIU isn’t, and it’s also not scoring in bunches. The Golden Panthers won’t be able to let this get away from them.
The Bulldog pass rush isn’t close to being at last year’s level, and it’s showing when it comes to the problems with the pass defense. FIU QB James Morgan has been banged up, and was ineffective when healthy. Kaylan Wiggins can move and can keep the chains moving.
Why Louisiana Tech Will Win
Here comes the Louisiana Tech passing game.
FIU’s secondary has been decent at preventing offenses from consistently connecting over the last two weeks, but it’s also giving up a ton of yards. It’s possible to throw on this group and control the clock.
Tech should have the ball for at least 33 minutes against a FIU team that doesn’t have a whole lot of explosion to take advantage of its opportunities.
The Bulldogs haven’t been great on third downs, and the running game is just okay, but veteran J’Mar Smith has gone off hitting 69% of his passes for 818 yards and five scores with a pick. He’s not making the big mistakes, and he’s not going to get pressured enough to screw up on Friday night, either.
What’s Going To Happen
On paper, at least before the season, this was the type of game that should’ve been a statement moment for FIU, and it still could be if the offense can start to crank it up a bit more.
Louisiana Tech has the passing game FIU doesn’t. The Golden Panthers will hang around on a weeknight, and it’ll keep the game from getting out of hand with decent field position and by capitalizing on a few takeaways. It won’t be enough in the fourth quarter to get past a big day from Smith.
