Duke (2-1) vs. Virginia Tech (2-1) Game Preview
Why Duke Will Win
Virginia Tech can’t seem to stop turning the ball over.
The loss to Boston College? -4 in turnover margin with three interceptions. The tough win over Old Dominion? -2 in turnover margin with two fumbles. The 24-17 win over Furman? Two more giveaways.
The Blue Devil offense should be able to take advantage of any mistakes, rising up over the last two weeks and – not surprisingly – looking a whole lot better after not playing Alabama.
QB Quentin Harris has been on fire, hitting over 80% of his passes over the last two weeks with eight touchdowns and no interceptions, partially because the offensive line is giving him all the time in the world. Duke leads the nation in fewest tackles for loss allowed and has given up just one sack in three games. That’s a must considering the pass rush is Virginia Tech’s biggest strength.
Give Harris time, let him dink and dunk on the Hokies secondary, and hope the D comes up with a few takeaways – the formula will get the win, however …
Why Virginia Tech Will Win
The Blue Devil defense doesn’t do much to generate turnovers.
So far, the secondary has yet to come up with a pick, and the defense has been able to fall on just three fumbles. With turnovers Virginia Tech’s issue, this week the O needs to get a break, and QB Ryan Willis has to fire away.
Middle Tennessee got rocked by Duke two weeks ago, but Blue Raider QB Asher O’Hara went off, connecting on 70% of his passes. Willis had his issues in the opener against Boston College, but he’s been relatively sharp over the last two games, including a 17-of-21 day against Furman.
The Hokie offense might be struggling to score, but it’s doing a great job – helped by Willis and his accuracy – of hitting its third down plays, and the defense is fantastic at not allowing the chains to move.
And then there’s the historical factor …
What’s Going To Happen
Virginia Tech has won three in a row in the series and has gone 14-1 since dropping the 1951 showdown 55-6.
Duke’s offense is scoring, and Virginia Tech’s isn’t. Duke’s offensive line has been terrific, and Virginia Tech’s has been just okay. Duke has rocked in its two easy games, and Virginia Tech has struggled.
But are you really going to buck history? Yeah, okay.
Both teams are rested and should be as fresh as they’re going to be. The Blue Devils will be just a wee bit sharper – even on the road – with a bit more offensive consistency in an interesting and entertaining four quarter battle.
