Colorado (2-0) vs. Air Force (1-0) Game Preview
Why Colorado Will Win
Considering Air Force attempted just one pass on the season so far, it’s all about whether or not the Buffs can handle the quirky ground game. So far, there hasn’t been any problems for the Colorado run defense under new head coach Mel Tucker.
The Buffs were able to hold Colorado State and Nebraska to a coming four yards per carry while forcing seven takeaways and generating constant pressure.
Air Force hasn’t faced any sort of a passing threat yet with just the one game against Colgate, and now it has to hold up against a Colorado passing game that’s humming early on. Laviska Shenault might be the star of the receiving corps, but KD Nixon lit up Nebraska, and eight different receivers made plays in the win.
The Air Force secondary is fine, but it’s not talented enough to deal with all the parts. If there’s no pass rush, QB Steven Montez will go off. But …
Why Air Force Will Win
Will the Buffs be able to control the tempo?
Time of possession hasn’t meant much to Colorado in the first two games, and Air Force has the ability to go on long drives to keep Montez and the offense on the sidelines.
It was just one game, but the Falcons ran for 423 yards and seven scores against Colgate, got 17 different players at least one carry, and rolled at will with and dominant performance. Colgate isn’t Colorado, but with two weeks off to rest up and prepare, the ground game should be fresh.
With the Pac-12 opener against Arizona State up next, and with the Nebraska date still fresh, this is a big-time sandwich moment for the Buffs. A crisp performance from the Falcons will make the Buffs press.
What’s Going To Happen
Considering how close the two schools are, it’s slightly crazy that it’s the first time the two have played since 1974.
Air Force will make this a fight.
Colorado won’t be sharp right out of the gate once again. It won’t get shut out like it did in the first half against Nebraska, but the Falcons will manage to control the game and the clock early on to take the lead.
The Buffs will wake up late in the first half and hit a few big passes in the second to finally pull ahead. Colorado will win, but it won’t be a walk in the park.
