Cal (3-0) vs. Ole Miss (2-1) Game Preview
Why Cal Will Win
The Cal secondary has been terrific so far, especially in key moments.
The Bears will give up yards, and the defense isn’t quite the rock it was last year, but so far it’s been able to keep the big plays from the opposing passing games to a bare minimum.
North Texas was able to come up with two touchdown throws last week, but it joined Washington and UC Davis as offenses that failed to crack the 5.5 yards per attempt mark.
Ole Miss has to get used to playing a geared down style. When it was able bomb away against Arkansas and SE Louisiana, the offense worked and there weren’t any problems. Against Memphis, the O couldn’t find a groove and went nowhere.
The attack will try getting the running game going, but fumbles have been a huge problem. Against Evan Weaver and the tremendous Cal linebackers, the Rebels are going to have to work way too hard.
Why Ole Miss Will Win
Get up early and make the Cal offense open it up.
That’s much, much easier said than done considering how good the Bear offense is, but this isn’t a team built on opening up the passing game.
The Bears are miserable at converting on third downs and average just 159 passing yards per game. This is a quick-hitting Rebel offense that appears to have figured things out over the last two games, with QB Matt Corral getting hot and and the ground game working on two straight 220+ yards performances.
Going back to the beginning of last season, the Bears have failed to score more than 24 points in 12 of their last 14 games against FBS teams, and it’s not likely going to happen this week.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s going to be a low-scoring game with each team needing to pull teeth to generate points. Cal is built for this, and Ole Miss isn’t.
The Rebels are lousy when it comes to controlling the clock and like to move in a hurry, but patience will be the key. The Bear defensive front seven will stuff the Ole Miss ground game, and that puts the game in the hands of the terrific secondary. It’ll come through.
