Cal (2-0) vs. North Texas (1-1) Game Preview
Why North Texas Will Win
The offense that fell flat against SMU has to rise up and shine again in a big hurry.
The running game worked – Tre Siggers ran for 164 yards – but that’s not the Mean Green attack. The passing game is supposed to go off and rock, but it sputtered early on, SMU got up 21-0 in the first, and that was that.
But the pieces are still there to do a whole lot more.
Cal still doesn’t have too much of an offense despite the 2-0 start, scoring 47 points over the first two games with nothing happening third downs and little going on down the field. This is a controlled team that needs to own the defensive side, not screw up on offense, and then take advantage of every opportunity.
The Mean Green have the firepower to get up right away and make the Bears press, but this isn’t a team equipped to do that.
Why Cal Will Win
Why hasn’t the North Texas offense worked like it’s supposed to?
The pass protection hasn’t been there for Mason Fine, there hasn’t been enough happening on third downs, and overall, there’s just no rhythm.
The Cal defense is great at taking teams out of their gameplans.
LB Evan Weaver and the defensive front are hitting everything so far, keeping the Washington offense from ever being able to do much of anything in the 20-19 win last week.
The pass rush will get to Fine, the secondary that stopped Jacob Eason will lock down on the UNT receivers, and the game will be played at the Bears’ pace.
What’s Going To Happen
This is more dangerous than it might appear for the Bears. It’s sandwich time coming off the emotional win over UW and with a trip to Ole Miss coming up next, and North Texas has the talent to wing it all over the yard and make this interesting.
Cal’s defensive front, though, will take over right away and stop everything on third downs. The power game will work well enough for the Bears to keep the Mean Green O on the sidelines for long stretches.
