Cal (4-0) vs. Arizona State (3-1) Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

The defense continues to be a brick wall. The stats might not be amazing for a top D, but there’s a good pass rush, the run defense get the job done, and overall, it’s allowing just 17 points per game.

The North Texas offense is deadly, and it got held to 17 points, The Bears had to go to Washington and to Ole Miss, and they didn’t allow more than 20 points in either game and came away with wins in both.

This team is used to winning close battles, and that’s what this should be.

Arizona State doesn’t have much of a rushing offense this season as is, and now it’s going to have a massive problem hitting the 100-yard mark. For all of the good things ASU is doing, scoring isn’t among them.

Now it has to find a way to manufacture points, and that’s going to be an issue against a defense that’s going get behind the line against a Sun Devil offensive front that allows way too many plays in the backfield.

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devil offense is doing a far better job of moving the chains than Cal is.

The Bears don’t take a whole lot of chances, but they don’t punt well, they’re awful in pass protection, and they have a hard time getting the O consistently going. Arizona State isn’t a mirror image of Cal, but it does a lot of things just as well.

Cal managed to go on the road and win two big games, and ASU isn’t going to be phased to take a road trip, either, allowing just seven points in the win over Michigan State – this team is build to win slugfest defensive battles. But last week, the O showed it could move, too.

Freshman Jayden Daniels is growing into the starting quarterback role, hitting Colorado for 345 yards and two scores and kept up the pace, and the pick he threw was his first on the year. He’s not making major mistakes, and he’s keeping his cool under fire.

What’s Going To Happen

The first one to score wins? These two will combine to put on a defensive show with neither one looking to take a whole lot of chances and both sides relying on their toughness and opportunistic nature to get by.

Both teams have strong kickers, but the one big difference between the two teams is in the punting game. Arizona State’s is fantastic, and Cal’s is just okay. Will that be enough to pull off the road win?

Not quite, but that, combined with Cal’s inability to push the ASU defense deep will be just enough to get Herm Edwards his second massive road win of the season.
