BYU (0-1) vs. Tennessee (0-1) Game Preview
Why BYU Will Win
So where did it all go so very, very wrong for Tennessee?
The offensive line couldn’t generate any sort of a push against the Georgia State defensive front, with only one big run from Ty Chandler as part of a ground game that got stuffed with surprising ease.
The Panther pass rush was able to get to QB Jarrett Guarantano way too easily, and it was able to get behind the line just enough to stall a few key Vol drives and get off the field.
BYU’s 30-12 loss to Utah might have been ugly, but it came against a team that might just be good enough to win the Pac-12 title. That was more about Utah being really, really good than BYU being lousy.
The Cougars couldn’t generate any pressure against the Ute line, but that’s about to change in Knoxville. They have the defensive front to hold down the Vol ground game and make Guarantano try to win this through the air.
Best of all, all of the pressure is on the orange side of the field. After last week’s ugly loss, any adversity whatsoever could send the Vols into a spiral.
Why Tennessee Will Win
BYU doesn’t have a running game, either.
If the Vol defensive front can keep QB Zach Wilson from taking off and busting out a steady stream of big runs – don’t think that that’s not a focus after Georgia State’s Dan Ellington coming up with the key dash late for the win – there won’t be too much to worry about from the Cougar O.
BYU has a decent receiving corps that should push the Tennessee secondary a bit, but that’s fine – the Vols will take their chances when the ball is in the air. Lost in the Georgia State debacle was how the Panther passing game couldn’t do a thing. There a were a few decent throws to keep things moving, but there weren’t enough of them.
On the other side, Jarrett Guarantano came up with a decent game against the Panthers with 311 yards and two scores, but he has to be more accurate and more consistent. The O was fine on third downs, and it outgained Georgia State by 52 yards overall.
The team just has to be sharper …
What’s Going To Happen
Tennessee has to be a LOT sharper.
The offensive line needs to come up with a night-and-day better performance than it did against BYU, and that’s going to be an issue against the active and tough Cougar defensive front.
After the debacle of last week, the pressure is on the Vols to be fantastic right away, and that’s not going to happen. However, they’ll be able to keep the game tight after a few early Cougar scores get the fan base grumbling.
Guarantano and the passing game will air it out and be successful enough to survive. It won’t be pretty, and it won’t make up for what happened last week, but it’ll pull the program up out of the nosedive … for now.
