Boston College (2-1) vs. Rutgers (1-1) Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

What the hell was that?

Boston College was rolling right along with a strong start to the season, and then it got rolled by a Kansas team that all of a sudden looked like Clemson.

This is the bounce-back moment before the ACC season kicks in full-force – getting Wake Forest next week – with this a must-win non-conference game. Lose, and bowl hopes are all but gone.

Rutgers couldn’t get anything going whatsoever against Iowa, failing to do anything through the air and getting stuffed on the ground for just 78 yards. The Eagles can move the chains, they’re great on third downs, and they don’t beat themselves with bad plays and penalties.

They dominate the turnover margin over the first three days and have the pass rush to bother the lousy Scarlet Knight passing attack. With six giveaways in just two games, Rutgers will be happy to give the ball away, but …

Why Rutgers Will Win

At least the pass protection has been great. The Scarlet Knights had two very different games against Iowa and UMass, but so far they’ve allowed just four tackles for loss and two sacks. Keeping BC out of the backfield is Job One.

The Eagle offense is going faster, and it’s showing with no worries whatsoever about the time of possession battle, and Rutgers needs to dominate this. BC is hanging on to the ball for just over 25 minutes a game, partly because the run defense has been shockingly bad – Kansas ripped off 319 yards on the ground with two 100-yard rushers and three scores.

If Kansas can look and play like that, with two weeks off to prepare, Rutgers has to hope it can catch lightning in a bottle, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College is much, much better than it played against Kansas.

The Eagle offense will get off to a hot start, the defense will do a far better job in the linebacking corps keeping the big runs to a minimum. The Scarlet Knight offense will be far, far better than it was against Iowa, and it still won’t be enough. BC will set too fast a pace that Rutgers – without QB McLane Carter – will be able to handle.
