Auburn (1-0) vs. Tulane (1-0) Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

Get ready for the hangover.

Auburn hung around with Oregon, and then hung around, and then hung around … and then Bo Nix came up with a brilliant two minutes, and it pulled out the win.

Can the team crank up the same intensity for Tulane?

The Green Wave are the real deal, with a terrific defensive front that held down a solid FIU offense to next to nothing on the ground, while turning into an ultra-efficient day from an offense that rolled from the start.

FIU is good enough to be in the mix for the Conference USA title, and it couldn’t do a thing to slow down Tulane’s balanced attack. Justin McMillan hit 14-of-18 passes, the running game tore off 350 yards, and the offense mixed it up enough to keep the Golden Panthers on their heels.

How do you offset the talent on the great Auburn defensive front? Keep things moving with a decent tempo, and don’t be afraid to push the ball down the field. Tulane’s offense is sneaky-good – it can do a little of everything.

Why Auburn Will Win

The Green Wave have to be perfect to pull this off, and that means slowing down the penalties. They were able to roll FIU without a problem, but they did it with 12 penalties for over 100 yards. They were able to get away with it, but FIU isn’t Auburn.

Even if Auburn is a little down in terms of intensity after the big win, the lines will still be more than win. The Green Wave rely on speed and quickness for their ground game, and Auburn’s defensive front just dealt with an Oregon team that can fly, and allowed just 90 rushing yards.

The Tigers will eat up the Green Wave on the inside, and they should be able to handle McMillian when he tries to stretch the field – McMillan isn’t Justin Herbert. As good as Oregon’s offense was, it didn’t connect on enough downfield passes.

Offensively, Bo Nix completed 13-of-31 passes against Oregon … and Auburn won. He’ll be better.

What’s Going To Happen

Watch out. Auburn is good, but it’s not sharp enough to sleepwalk through a bowl-caliber American Athletic Conference team that might just contend for a league championship.

This is a tight Tulane squad that will provide more of a push than the Tigers might like. Get ready for way, way too many Auburn field goals.

Everyone will wake up in time to get the win, but it’ll be a fight. Tulane will have chances to put it away, and won’t be able to. Auburn’s defense will rise up when it has to.
