Auburn (3-0) vs. Texas A&M (2-1) Game Preview
Why Auburn Will Win
The offense might have struggled against Oregon and Tulane, and it only blew up against Kent State, but it’s doing its job.
No, this isn’t going to be the explosive Tiger attack of 2013 and 2017, but it’s effective at moving the chains. That might be boring, and that might not be what Auburn fans want in the passing game, but when you convert 51% of your third down chances, things are going to go well.
Against A&M, the Auburn lines have to keep being fantastic.
The offensive front has pounded away for 845 rushing yards and close to six yards per carry – granted, most of them came against Kent State – and it’s only allowed three sacks so far.
The defensive front continues to be the defensive front, doing a great job in the interior and allowing just three yards per carry so far. The Aggie running game is still unproven, doing a great job against Texas State and Lamar, and nothing against Clemson.
Can Kellen Mond come through with a big performance? The A&M QB only hit half of his passes for 220 yards and a score with a pick in last year’s loss to the Tigers, and he only hit 5-of-11 throws as a freshman in the blowout loss.
Why Texas A&M Will Win
Can Bo Nix come through with a consistent game?
The freshman has been fine, but it’s not time to get him in the Heisman race after completing 12-of-16 throws for 161 yards and a score against Kent State. He still hasn’t been accurate enough, and now he has to deal with the Aggie pass rush that hasn’t shown up yet, but is decent at getting behind the line.
Can the Auburn running game blast away? Clemson was held to 121 yards by the Aggies, and the D is better than the stats with Lamar tearing off a few big runs in the 62-3 loss – Nix is going to have to be great.
Considering the way both teams control the clock, and with the way Texas A&M likes to occasionally play a stall-ball style, field position will be a must.
Auburn is dead last among SEC teams – and is 127th in the nation – in punting, and Texas A&M’s Braden Mann continues to be a weapon. There will be long stretches when it seems like the ball is always on the Tiger side of the field.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s going to be a low-scoring pounding of a game with both teams in the game until the end. Both teams will try to run, and can’t, and both teams need their respective starting quarterbacks to rock, and they’ll struggle.
Mond will be a bit better than Nix, the the A&M special teams will be a wee bit stronger in a battle of great field goal kickers. Auburn’s Anders Carlson and Texas A&M’s Seth Small will be the stars.
