Arkansas (1-0) vs. Ole Miss (0-1) Game Preview
Why Arkansas Will Win
Is it possible for the Hogs to match their 2018 win total by Week Two of 2019?
Yeah, if the Ole Miss offense hasn’t come up with any answers over the last week.
New Rebel offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez couldn’t get anything going against a Memphis defense that’s not exactly going to be confused with Alabama’s.
How bad was it? The Rebels managed just 173 yards of total offense, didn’t score a touchdown until the fourth quarter, and covered just one of ten third down chances.
The Arkansas offense didn’t rip it up in the 20-13 win over Portland State, but call it a tune-up game with Rakeem Boyd running well, new quarterbacks Ben Hicks and Nick Starkel getting in some work, and the team getting a win even though things weren’t going quite right.
What did work was a defense that generated six sacks. The Ole Miss offensive line was a disaster against Memphis, and that’s how the Hogs have to pull this off – they have to live behind the line.
Why Ole Miss Will Win
The Arkansas offense really, really didn’t work against an FCS team.
New starting quarterback Ben Hicks from SMU was all over the place with his passes. Nick Starkel came in from Texas A&M and stepped into a bit of a role in the first game, and he wasn’t great.
There wasn’t much pop or explosion, and it took way too much work to finally hold off the Vikings.
Yeah, the Ole Miss offense – or lack of it – might be getting all the publicity, but that was a fantastic Memphis O that was all but shut down by the Rebels.
The secondary did a nice job of keeping everything short, there weren’t the typical home runs there normally is from the Tiger running game, and there weren’t any touchdowns allowed in the second half.
What’s Going To Happen
Last year’s game was a 37-33 Ole Miss win – we can only hope for that much offense out of these two.
Which attack will bust out first? Eventually, both teams will generate more production and pop, but who’ll get there faster?
Expect the Ole Miss offense to be just a wee bit stronger after last week’s disaster, with more downfield passing and a bigger game from RB Scottie Phillips.
At home, the Rebel defense will be a wee bit stronger, especially in the secondary. The Arkansas O that’s still getting used to a wholesale change of starters isn’t going to be sharp or clutch enough.
