Air Force (2-0) vs. Boise State (3-0) Game Preview
Why Air Force Will Win
Well look at Air Force being all nasty against the Power Five.
It’s one thing to rip off 423 rushing yards and seven scores against Colgate, but to crank up 284 yards and two scores in a win at Colorado was special. It was the moment when the Falcons – at least early on – showed that they can be a real live player in the Mountain West race.
The running game isn’t going to be able to rip off big yards in chunks, but the Falcons know how to set themselves up for good situations, short third down plays, and to keep drives alive – they’re hitting 58% of their third down chances.
There’s a bit of a new wrinkle now for Mountain West teams to worry about. The passing game might work a bit better.
The Falcons only tried one pass against Colgate and completed it for a 41-yard score, but against Colorado, Donald Hammond was able to connect on enough deep balls to open things up a bit – he hit seven of his 12 passes with two scores. As always with this O, as soon as those deep balls start hitting, everything else opens up.
Why Boise State Will Win
Hank Bachmeier might get a week off from getting popped.
The Boise State offensive line hasn’t done him any favors so far, getting him sacked 13 times and without a killer running game to help the cause. However, even with the issues, the offense has been able to control games and dominate the time of possession battle.
Air Force has to have the ball for at least 35 minutes, and it’s not going to.
Bachmeier keeps getting popped, and then he nails his third down throws. The Broncos are making up for a whole slew of concerns – and getting by in close games against Florida State and Marshall – but dominating on the money plays on both sides of the ball and hold the on to possession for close to 36 minutes.
Even if the O isn’t exploding, this is one of the few teams that can take the tempo away from the Falcons.
What’s Going To Happen
Air Force might have had everything working just right against Colorado last week, but on the road at Boise, it’s going to be taken out of its game.
The Broncos run defense will won’t get into the backfield enough against the Air Force style, but it’ll contain everything outside and make the Falcons grind it out a bit. Unlike last year’s shootout – a 48-38 Boise State win – this one is going to be far more of a slugfest.
Again, Boise State will control the clock and the game. Air Force can’t survive that.
