WKU (0-0) vs. Central Arkansas (0-0) Game Preview

New head coach Tyson Helton inherits a good, decent team that wasn’t able to do much of anything last season until it was way too late. The Hilltoppers won just three games with two at the very end, and there was a loss to Maine from the FCS world early on.

Central Arkansas gave Tulsa a bit of a fight to start out last year, and it finished up a solid 6-5 with a terrific defense and an uncanny ability to win the turnover battle.

Why Central Arkansas Will Win

WKU had better be able to throw, because the ground game almost certainly isn’t going anywhere. The Hilltoppers are loaded with offensive veterans, but the offensive line didn’t do anything for the ground attack last season, and the passing game didn’t pick up the slack.

This year, the WKU O should be stronger at pushing the ball down the field, but it might take a little while to start moving the ball on the ground. UCA finished 12th in the nation among FCS teams against the run, and it gets back just about everyone on the defensive front. But …

Why WKU Will Win

The Bear secondary is about to get bombed on. The WKU quarterback situation is stronger, Lucky Jackson and the receivers are good, and Central Arkansas isn’t going to be able to do much against the pass early on.

The pass rush should be good again, and three starters are back in the secondary, but the D that allowed almost 300 yards per game last year is going to be dinked and dunked on to death. The UCA O won’t have the scoring punch to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

As long as the Hilltoppers don’t have a problem turning the ball over, they’ll be able to crank up just enough offense to pull away in the second half. The Central Arkansas defense is the real deal, but it’ll stumble as the game goes on. The WKU passing game will show the effectiveness missing for most of last season. At least for one game, Helton’s team will look the part.
