Washington State (0-0) vs. New Mexico State (0-0) Game Preview
It’s the first ever meeting between the two programs that should be an interesting offensive shootout.
How bad are things to start the season for New Mexico State? This is the warm-up game – a trip to Alabama is up next. That’s followed up by a date with San Diego State.
Washington State gets Northern Colorado up next as part of the two-game cupcake tour, but it has to go on the road to face a dangerous Houston team before kicking off Pac-12 play.
Why New Mexico State Will Win
It’s a veteran Aggie offense with just enough pop to potentially crank up more of a passing game.
Josh Adkins is a veteran quarterback who’s more than fine as long as he gets time to work. Five of the top six Aggie receivers are back to push a Wazzu secondary that’s rebuilding a bit with three new starters.
On the other side, Washington State is starting a new quarterback, and he’ll have to deal with an NMSU pass rush that should once against be able to generate a good push. Almost everyone returns up front, and there’s no worrying about the Cougar ground game. The Aggie secondary isn’t going to be all that bad.
Why Washington State Will Win
The Wazzu pass rush should have a whole lot of fun.
Yeah, the Aggies return a ton of experience up front, but they had a nightmare of a time and consistently keeping the quarterback from getting hit.
The Cougar offense gets to enjoy the spotlight, but the defense was terrific last season as it led the Pac-12 in sacks. The line can generate pressure from inside and out, and the linebacking corps is good enough to clean up anything the pedestrian Aggie running game will do.
And the Washington State offense will once again be pretty good, too.
What’s Going To Happen
It’ll be a no-drama game for Washington State as it gets live action for both quarterback options Gage Gubrud and Anthony Gordon. The defense will let this be possible with a great performance from the start on the way to a big early Cougar lead.
