Virginia Tech (0-0) vs. Boston College (0-0) Game Preview

Two teams in need of a strong start to the season need to be great right away in the ACC opener.

Virginia Tech won three straight in the interdivisional series, and then had a problem in the midst of the 2018 midseason skid with a 31-21 loss in Blacksburg.

Boston College gets a nice break to follow with three straight games against teams that didn’t go bowling, and then comes the home game against Wake Forest.

The Hokies get Old Dominion and Furman to follow before facing Duke. Win this, and they’re realistically 6-1 – at worst – before dealing with a road trip to Notre Dame.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

While the offense might need a little while to get going, the defense should be far better after going through the rough rebuilding season.

The Hokies have to get tougher up front, but the linebacking corps is about to be fantastic with a more experienced group that can move and hit. With all five starters in the secondary returning, too, the run defense should be able to keep AJ Dillon and the ground game from tearing off big dashes.

Offensively, as long as there aren’t a slew of giveaways – for all of the problems, the O led the ACC in fewest turnovers – the defense should be able to take care of the rest. However …

Why Boston College Will Win

The Virginia Tech run defense still has to prove it.

The Hokies were gashed way too often last season, and even though there’s experience in the back seven, it’s a bad thing if the Eagle are getting to the second and third levels – and they might.

The offensive line is the biggest early concern for the BC O, but Dillon is fresh, and QB Anthony Brown is a solid veteran who won’t make a whole slew of mistakes. All he has to do is keep the chains moving and control the clock. The Eagle defense is breaking in seven new starters, and …

What’s Going To Happen

BC was awful at controlling the clock last season. Both teams have a whole slew of major problems and concern to overcome, and both teams are breaking in new parts that have to rise up and rock right away.

Boston College won’t get the passing game working out of the gate, Virginia Tech’s defense will come up with a big performance, and it’ll be a close – and ugly – Hokie win. On the road, the program will take it no matter how it looks.
