Texas (0-0) vs. Louisiana Tech (0-0) Game Preview

It’s the first ever meeting between the two teams, and it’s the first of two very, very interesting games for Texas against the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana Tech has a nice team returning with a better-looking offense to go along with a defense that should give Texas a few issues.

The big one for the Longhorns, though, comes up next against LSU.

Everything eases up for Louisiana Tech with Grambling and Bowling Green to follow – this is the lone date against a Power Five program.

Texas has lost three of its last four season openers, and Louisiana Tech hasn’t beaten a Power Five program in an opener since 2008 – a 22-14 win over Mississippi State.

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

This is a scary game for the Texas to revamp its secondary and defensive parts.

Louisiana Tech’s offense might have been underwhelming last year, but it’s got the parts to be far, far better. It stars with a veteran quarterback in J’Mar Smith and a loaded receiving corps with ten of the top targets returning.

The Texas secondary is talented, but it’s young. The D line is the biggest overall concern – at least in terms of experience and new parts – dealing with a veteran Bulldog O line that should be good in the interior right out of the gate.

The Tech defense might have lost Jaylon Ferguson and some of the star pass rushers, but the secondary that was outstanding throughout all of last year gets back a slew of all-star caliber talent.

Why Texas Will Win

The Louisiana Tech offensive line will be fine in time, but this is the game to crank up the pass rush and get the ends in place – the Bulldogs have to replace both starting tackles.

There might be parts to a passing game that will be far stronger, but the O couldn’t run the ball last season and was painfully inefficient for stretches. Even with all of the new starting parts on the Texas defense, it’s a fast and athletic group.

This is the game to get physical. The Bulldog secondary that shut down Hawaii and gave the high-powered North Texas passing game problems will be terrific – it won’t matter. Texas can lather up and pound away, control the clock, and now worry too much, because …

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech won’t have the offense to mount any sort of a charge if Texas can get out to an early 14-0 lead – which it will. The Bulldogs won’t get blown out, but the Longhorns will be able to put it on cruise control after the first quarter. Texas will be a +3 in turnover margin, and it’ll capitalize and all the chances.
