Notre Dame (0-0) vs. Louisville (0-0) Game Preview
Only 250ish miles apart straight through Indiana, it seems like these two programs should have played more than once – a 31-28 Louisville win in 2014. Now they face off in the first game of the Scott Satterfield era.
Was 2018 just an aberration for the Cardinals? After eight straight winning seasons and a whole lot of good parts put together under Bobby Petrino, last season went off the rails in a hurry, especially on defense. With Eastern Kentucky and WKU to follow, they should be at least 2-1 to start the season – just like last year – before going to Florida State.
The Irish have much bigger fish to fry in a few weeks when they travel to Georgia in one of the biggest games of the season. They get New Mexico next to tune-up, but blasting away on Louisville would be a nice start.
Why Notre Dame Will Win
Is the Louisville offensive line going to be any better right away?
The Cardinal defense was a disaster, but the biggest issue was an offensive front that couldn’t stop anyone from getting to the quarterback or getting into the backfield. There wasn’t a rushing attack, the passing game couldn’t make up for it, and there were way too many turnovers.
The Irish pass rush was excellent at times last season – even though it wasn’t great at coming up with tackles for loss – and it has the guys on the outside who can generate pressure. Julian Okwara and Khalid Kareem could take over this game from the start.
Keep on sending players into the backfield, and the Louisville offense that was the worst in the nation on third downs will have huge problems again. On the plus side for the Cardinals …
Why Louisville Will Win
The defense that was so miserable last season at least returns experience.
Nine of the top 11 tacklers return to a young group that should be much better and much more consistent under the new coaching staff. There’s athleticism and speed, but now the production has to show up.
The offense has the receiving corps to explode right out of the gate. Top target Jaylen Smith is done, but this is a huge group with the size and skill to give the Julian Love-less secondary several problems. But …
What’s Going To Happen
The Notre Dame defensive backs have good size, too.
Louisville will be a whole lot better this season under new head coach Scott Satterfield – don’t be shocked if the Cardinals go bowling – but the Notre Dame O will be too efficient, too explosive, and too strong as the game goes on. It won’t be a total wipeout, but expect a decisive performance by the Irish on both sides of the ball.
