Maryland (0-0) vs. Howard (0-0) Game Preview
Why Howard Will Win
It’s a veteran Bison team returning with nine starters back on the offensive side and eight back on defense.
Caylin Newton – Cam’s brother, who was the star of the upset win over UNLV a few years ago – is back at quarterback along with excellent running back Dedrick Parson. The Bison offense will be great at taking shots down the field again – it was fourth in the FCS last season in passing yards per completion – and should be dangerous overall after averaging 471 yards per game.
Can the Terp defense find a pass rush that wasn’t there throughout last year? Can the secondary get past a few key losses and a few injury issues? Howard will be more than a nice scrimmage on the offensive side, but …
Why Maryland Will Win
Can the run defense stop what’s coming?
The offense will do its part, but the defensive side that allowed 230 rushing yards per game doesn’t have a ton of size, and it should get ripped to shreds by an absolutely loaded backfield with too many great backs to get the ball.
Virginia Tech QB transfer Josh Jackson is a good all-around talent who should be able to fire at will, but he won’t have to. The running game should blow past 300 yards and dominate the time of possession battle.
What’s Going To Happen
The Howard offense will open it up enough to come up with a few scores to keep this from being a total wipeout, but the Terps will be able to drive at will with a massive rushing day to give Locksley an easy win before hosting Syracuse.
