Georgia (0-0) vs. Vanderbilt (0-0) Game Preview
There haven’t been any problems over the last few seasons for Georgia against Vanderbilt with two straight blowout wins, but a 17-16 Commodore victory in 2016 was a shocker, and the 31-27 upset in 2013 was big.
Vanderbilt is coming off a good 6-7 season with a bowl appearance and several entertaining wins, but it was inconsistent. There’s no time for that with the nation’s No. 3 up first to kick things off followed up by a trip to Purdue and a date with LSU.
Good luck with that.
Georgia has Murray State and Arkansas State to follow before getting Notre Dame, but overall, the schedule isn’t that bad until the Florida showdown in early November. It’s muscle-flexing time on the road to show that it really does belong in the discussion with Alabama and Clemson.
Why Vanderbilt Will Win
The quarterback situation might not have been settled with a true No. 1 in fall camp, but the receiving corps is in place to produce. Jared Pinkney is one of the nation’s top tight ends, Kalija Lipscomb is one of the SEC’s best kept receiver secrets – at least nationally – and RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn is a home run hitter who averaged over five yards per carry.
The Georgia defense is loaded with next-level talent across the board, but will there be a pass rush? There wasn’t one throughout last season, and it would be a massive help for the rebuilding Vandy front five if the Dawgs didn’t show up with the pressure right away.
There’s just enough overall firepower to potentially keep up the pass if the Dawg D isn’t on right away. However …
Why Georgia Will Win
Vanderbilt won’t have much of a pass rush right away, either.
The Commodores might have a wee bit of success here and there against a Dawg D that might need a week or two to get up to speed, but forget about it on the other side of the ball.
The Georgia offensive line is one of the best in the nation, if not on top, and it’s gong to take over right away. Vanderbilt won’t be able to handle the Dawg ground game, and then Jake Fromm will take over.
How good has been against Vandy in his first two tries? 24-of-34 (71%) for 379 yards and five touchdowns with no picks. Get ready for more of the same.

What’s Going To Happen
The Commodores will do just enough early on, and Georgia will be just sloppy enough in the opener, to keep this an interesting fight for at least the first 20 minutes. And then the Dawgs will kick it all in.
The D will force two turnovers the O will end up scoring off of, and then the Georgia offensive front will take over from there. The final score will be worse than the actual game.
