Arizona State (0-0) vs. Kent State (0-0) Game Preview

It’s the first ever matchup between the two programs, with Arizona State needing to use this as a tune-up, and with Kent State looking to get its FlashFast offensive style going in Year Two under Sean Lewis.

The Golden Flashes don’t have it easy right after this – Kennesaw is a dangerous FCS team, and then it’s off to Auburn – and Arizona State is easing its way into the season. This shouldn’t be a problem, and then comes the layup against Sacramento State before the showdown at Michigan State.

Why Kent State Will Win

The Kent State offense hardly did anything special – it couldn’t crack the 23-point mark against any FBS team – but it got better as the season went on, and now there’s just enough talent returning to be hopeful for a hot start.

It’s an interesting defensive mix starting out the season for ASU, with a loaded group of linebackers around a whole lot of young parts being thrown into the mix. If the Golden Flash offense can be consistent right out of the box, and if QB Woody Barrett can get on the move and hit the midrange passes, there’s a chance to keep things moving.

All five starters return on the offensive line, the receivers are solid, and Barrett is a weapon, but …

Why Arizona State Will Win

There’s no need to overthink this.

The Kent State defense was the worst in the MAC last season, there’s little bulk up front, and there isn’t enough experience to hold up if the ASU running game gets going.

The quarterback situation might be a bit of a fight even throughout the first part of the season, but the offensive line is a rock and Eno Benjamin will be one of the nation’s most productive backs. The Sun Devils will line up and pound away on what will be a porous Kent State D line.

What’s Going To Happen

The Kent State offense might be experienced, but it’s going to sputter and struggle to get going. The Arizona State offense will be surprisingly sharp in all phases, Benjamin will only need a half to get in the work he needs, and it’ll be a nice and easy day for home team.
