Alabama (0-0) vs. Duke (0-0) Game Preview
Just how much of a statement does Alabama want to make after having to sit back and groove on the 44-16 national championship embarrassment against Clemson?
When was the last time anyone came within ten points of Bama in the season opener? 2006 with a 25-17 win over Hawaii. When was the last time Bama lost a season opener? 2001 against UCLA.
When was the last time Bama played Duke? 2010 – a 62-13 Tide win.
But the Blue Devils won the 1945 Sugar Bowl.
This is a good Duke team with a whole lot to like, but this game is all about seeing just how quickly Alabama can get back to being Alabama again.
Blowing up the Blue Devils won’t do a thing to erase anything that happened in Santa Clara, but anything less than complete and total domination will make for a whole lot of interesting discussions before the Tide faces New Mexico State.
Duke gets to take out its frustration the next week against North Carolina A&T.
Why Duke Will Win
Alabama has a whole slew of issues, and the season hasn’t started.
Star Dylan Moses – arguably the best linebacker in college football and a top 15 NFL prospect – is out for the year with a torn ACL, and four offensive stars – running backs Najee Harris and Brian Robinson, WR DeVonta Smith and LB Terrell Lewis – are suspended for the first half.
It’s a veteran Blue Devil defense that won’t make a ton of mistakes and should be terrific at times this year against the better passing teams.
With star corner Mark Gilbert back and excellent safety Dylan Singleton back, Duke has one of the ACC’s better secondaries that can get around the ball and come up with plenty of takeaways. The line might not be a killer, but it gets back all four starters and should be decent at getting behind the line.
Duke will have to pitch a perfect game to keep this from being brutal. It can’t commit the turnovers like it did throughout last year, and after finishing third in the nation in fewest penalties, it can’t make a slew of big mistakes.
Why Alabama Will Win
The Tide defense is about to come out and make a statement, even without Moses.
The offense is going to be unstoppable this season. The NFL talent all across the skill spots should do whatever it wants, but it’s the other side of the ball that has to prove it’s back up to its pre-2018 form.
Of course last year’s Bama D was good, but it wasn’t the brick wall that became one of the givens under Nick Saban. Now it starts the year against a Blue Devil attack that has to replace seven starters from an O that scored 21 points or fewer six times.
What’s Going To Happen
Even with all of the problems and concerns with the Bama suspensions and Moses injury …
Duke is a good, sound team that should end up with at least six wins and a bowl bid, but it’s about to feel a whole lot of pain and torment from a program that’s been waiting over seven months to erase the Clemson loss.
Get ready for a big four-quarter statement – the Tide will be great in the first half, too.
