All You Really Need To Know About Virginia (31-3)
(ACC), NCAA NET Rank: 1. South 1-seed
Oregon brought the defense against Virginia, but the Cavs put the clamps down late to hang on for a thrilling 53-49 win – if a 53-49 game could actually be thrilling.
The Cavs struggled from three, and they were just okay from the field, but the offense moved the ball around better and the defense force a few more turnovers. In a game like that where every little thing mattered, Virginia managed to play its game and it worked.
The offense is there to crank up the scoring if needed, but everything works around the defense that slows things to a crawl and attacks and suffocates. Virginia won’t beat itself, but the three has to fall a bit more to get into the Final Four.
All You Really Need To Know About Purdue (26-9)
(Big Ten), NCAA NET Rank: 12. South 3-seed
Who’s it going to be in this game? Carsen Edwards has arguably been the tournament’s biggest star – scoring 29 in the 99-94 overtime win over Tennessee – but it was the unconscious outside shooting from Ryan Cline that go the Boilermakers into the Elite Eight, hitting 7-of-10 from three.
Can they handle the Virginia defense?
They have the size on the inside, the veteran guards to handle the pressure, and mental toughness to rise up time and again so far over the first three games. They’ll outbound the Cavaliers, but can they figure out how to get the O going enough to handle the defensive pressure that’s coming?
What’s Going To Happen
Tennessee was and is better than Purdue, but that didn’t matter. The Boilermakers are playing fearlessly, shooting out of their minds from the outside, not turning the ball over, and …
Again, not turning the ball over. The Boilermakers just don’t screw up enough for Virginia to take advantage of easy points, and the three point shooting ability should be just enough to come up with the right shot at the right time. It’s not going to be a shootout in the 90s, but Purdue will take it.
