All You Really Need To Know About Virginia Tech (24-8)

(ACC), NCAA NET Rank: 11. East 4-seed

The Hokies were doing just fine over the last month when they weren’t playing Florida State. The Noles bounced them out of the ACC Tournament in an overtime thriller, but this is still a good enough Virginia Tech team to make a whole lot of noise if it gets hot.

The offense puts up threes, and makes them – it’s the ACC’s best team from the outside. And now, the O has its star back, with Justin Robinson returning from a foot injury. The defense will force mistakes, the free throws are a plus, and the defense is able to keep games in range. However, every game seems like a grind, and there’s a big, big problem against teams that can hit the boards.

All You Really Need To Know About Saint Louis (23-12)

(Atlantic 10), NCAA NET Rank: 103. East 13-seed

Mediocre throughout the year, the Billikens finished sixth in the A-10, but they turned it on at the right time, winning six of their last seven including the conference tournament title over St. Bonaventure. It’s a small, young team, but it’s a deep group that hits the boards, really, really hard.

They get rebounding production from everywhere, leading the conference in offensive boards to make up for their issues from the field. They don’t do anything from three, but they’re great from the free throw line. They need to keep games slow and steady and can’t get into a shootout – they have to be in control throughout.

What’s Going To Happen

The Hokies are great from the outside, but Saint Louis is strong enough defensively to keep them from going off. The bigger issue for Virginia Tech will be rebounds – they won’t get enough. It’ll be a low scoring fight with the Billikens keeping it close with more happening on the free throw line … and on the glass. When needed late, the Hokies will have just a bit more scoring pop.
