All You Really Need To Know About UC Irvine (31-5)
(Big West), NCAA NET Rank: 68. South 13-seed
The Anteaters didn’t turtle. They managed to change around and take Kansas State’s best shot before pulling away late for the thrilling 70-64 upset win. Even through their a 13-seed, they’re the real deal on a red-hot streak at the right time. They managed to hit close to 40% from three against the Wildcats, they hit their free throws down the stretch, and they did their part defensively.
It’s a great rebounding team that got outrebounded. On the year, UCI finished ninth in the nation in rebounding margin, but Kansas State won the battle 34-33. There are too many turnovers overall, there are too many fouls, and there normally isn’t enough happening from three, but this team knows how to make the right plays at the right time to win.
All You Really Need To Know About Oregon (24-12)
(Pac-12), NCAA NET Rank: 51. South 9-seed
The Ducks pulled away in a shocking blowout over Wisconsin by playing better defense than the team that lives on defense, and catching a break from a Badger offense that was brutally painful on open threes – making just 6-of-30 – in a 72-54 Duck win. Give the Pac-12 conference champion all the credit, though, for rising up at the right time.
They’re athletic, they’re confident, and they’re deep enough to keep the run going with a whole slew of winnable games up next in the South Region. On the year. Oregon held teams to just 29% from three – Wisconsin really did miss a lot of open ones, though – and was all over the defensive boards to clean everything up. They’re quick, they’re generating plenty of pressure, and again, they’re playing really, really well at the right time.
What’s Going To Happen
UC Irvine has to rebound, rebound and rebound, and it can’t get caught up in Oregon’s defensive pressure. It’s going to get caught up in Oregon’s defensive pressure.
Both teams are doing everything well at the moment, but the Anteaters will foul too often, they won’t be able to handle the Oregon quickness, and they’ll struggle from outside as they try to pull back into the game late.
