All You Really Need To Know About Iowa (22-11)

(Big Ten), NCAA NET Rank: 43. South 10-seed

It’s a rising team that should be a killer next year, but might just be a year away. There’s balanced scoring with four Hawkeyes averaging 11 points or more, and there’s a whole lot of depth, but there’s only one senior. Now they have to turn it on after losing five of their last six games, getting ripped up by Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament.

They hit a whole lot of free throws and get to the line a whole lot thanks to an offense that moves the ball well and is great at making the extra pass. The defense, though, is just okay, and the size doesn’t translate into blocks. With the length and the scoring pop, they’re going to be a sneaky-tough out.

All You Really Need To Know About Cincinnati (28-6)

(American Athletic), NCAA NET Rank: 25. South 10-seed

As long as the offense doesn’t need to rock, the Bearcats are going to be a problem in the first weekend. They closed out with a 15-3 run before rolling to the AAC tournament title with a win over Houston. It all starts with the defensive presence of 6-11 Nysier Brooks to go along with the scoring of Jarron Cumberland and Keith Williams.

They can’t and don’t hit from three, and they don’t do much of anything on the defensive boards, but they don’t make mistakes and come up with a whole slew of blocked shots. Great at cleaning things up on the offensive glass, and better at attacking mediocre backcourts, they’re tough as nails.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa just has to play Iowa’s game. It has to hold down the Bearcats from the outside, and it has to own the glass throughout – and it will. However …

How does Cincinnati get a game just 100 miles away in Columbus?

The Hawkeye defense isn’t anything special, and the Bearcats will do just enough keep the game slow and low scoring. Iowa has been way too inconsistent, and the offense will miss just enough to keep it close. The UC defensive pressure will take over in the second half.
