All You Really Need To Know About Auburn (26-9)
(SEC), NCAA NET Rank: 18. Midwest 5-seed
The Tigers overcame a rocky middle of the season to go on an eight-game winning run to get to the SEC Tournament championship and destroy Tennessee for the title. They go ten deep and come in waves, but the scoring comes from the three-headed monster of guards Bryce Brown and Jared Harper along with forward Chuma Okeke. They can score inside and out.
No one in the SEC shot and made more threes, but they can out in transition, too. The defense generates plenty of pressure and lots of steals, but there’s not enough happening on the boards – they’re going to get cleaned up by a great offensive rebounding team.
All You Really Need To Know About New Mexico State (30-4)
(WAC), NCAA NET Rank: 40. Midwest 12-seed
There’s not a whole lot on the resumé, but the Aggies gave Kansas fits, and after getting shocked by Cal-Baptist they ripped off 19 straight wins on the way to the WAC title. Unlike past good NMSU teams that worked on size and experience, the freshmen – Terrell Brown and Eli Chuha – are the stars.
The Aggies are amazing from three with the ability to score in bunches. Best of all, despite the lack of bulk, they hit the boards really, really hard. They don’t block shots and they’re not much from the free throw line, but against … they score, score, score. They’ll be happy to play in the 80s if needed.
What’s Going To Happen
Who’s ready to have some fun?
No … I don’t think you mean it. Who’s ready to have some FUN?
This will be the wildest, craziest shootout of the first round with both teams shooting from three, and then shooting more threes. And more threes, and more, and more, and more. The difference is that New Mexico State is better at guarding from the outside, and they’re stronger on the boards.
They’re both going to put up a whole lot of points, but New Mexico State will get more one-and-dones – and a few more offensive rebounds.
