3. The Flips Were A Bit More Mean-Spirited Than Normal, And Here’s Why …

There weren’t that many top recruits left on National Signing Day.

There have always been flips, and there have always been coaches trying to dance with someone else’s date, but this year, the practice took on a different form.

This time around – especially in the SEC – you had all of the top recruiting staffs with time to not only go after those two to three superstars still deciding, but also turn into vultures on those who gave their verbal word, but didn’t sign in December.

And it got ugly.

Take the case of LSU. Ed Orgeron came up with a monster of a class that was definitely a top five haul, and could make a reasonable case for No. 1. But was that the story? Not really.

Orgeron came into NSD thinking he’d land at least two of the three star defensive lineman who were all but committed to taking their talents to Baton Rouge. Instead, Alabama swooped in and ripped away DE Byron Young and DT Ishmael Sopsher. DE Charles Moore – okay, not technically a flip, but still heartbreaking – ended up choosing Auburn.

But the Tigers had a high-profile issue of their own.

6-4, 190-pound NFL-talent WR George Pickens was an Auburn Tiger. He was all but out of the mix for everyone else for almost two years, and was considered a mortal lock to stay close to home. But in the Always Be Closing world of college recruiting, Georgia didn’t quit, and it stole away a superstar prospect.

Auburn also thought it was going to hose Tennessee by stealing OT Ledarrius Cox … right up until Ole Miss stepped in and got the potential anchor for its line.

Alabama might have screwed up LSU, but Florida was able to swoop down and yoink DE Khris Bogle away from Nick Saban’s grasp. The Tide signed a slew of defensive backs, but they still got burned by Miami when Manny Diaz snagged away S Christian Williams.
