These can and will change after spring ball and going into the season, but for now, as a starting point, welcome to your pre-everything early ranking of all the Sun Belt teams.

SUN BELT EAST

5. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Will the Chanticleers need to decide on a quarterback right away, but all of the other pieces are there from last year’s young team. The running backs need some depth, but the receivers are there and all five starters are back up front. The secondary is the concern on a defense, but the line should be fantastic with everyone back. Overall, five of the top six tacklers return.

Final 2018 Record: 5-7 (2-6)
2018 Sun Belt East Finish: 4
2018 Prespring Sun Belt Conference Ranking: 10
Biggest Issue To Fix: Pass Protection
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Offensive Line
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Quarterback

4. Georgia State Panthers

The bad 2017 season had a silver lining – the Panthers return loaded with experience. They get back everyone on the offensive line, but the D line depth needs work. The offensive backfield is fine, and the secondary is loaded with veterans, but can the offense find a playmaker to replace WR Penny Hart, who’s gone to the NFL early?

Final 2018 Record: 2-10 (1-7)
2018 Sun Belt East Finish: 5
2018 Prespring Sun Belt Conference Ranking: 9
Biggest Issue To Fix: Pass Rush
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Offensive Line
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Defensive Line

3. Georgia Southern Eagles

Coming off a strong season, the Georgia Southern running game gets back option wizard Shai Werts to run the whole thing, but the top two running backs are done. Three of the O linemen are back, and while the passing attack is along for the ride, all the wide receivers return. The 3-4 defense is full of veterans, but the secondary needs to replace the safeties.

Final 2018 Record: 10-3 (6-2)
2018 Sun Belt East Finish: 3
2018 Prespring Sun Belt Conference Ranking: 5
Biggest Issue To Fix: Punting Game
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Linebacker
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Running Back

2. Troy Trojans

New head coach Chip Lindsey has the pieces in place to keep all the success rolling. The offensive backfield is loaded with QB Sawyer Smith back along with the top three running backs. The O line is fantastic, but the receiving corps has to replace the top three targets. Five of the top seven tacklers return including most of the best playmakers in the linebacking corps. However, replacing Hunter Reese is a problem.

Final 2018 Record: 10-3 (7-1)
2018 Sun Belt East Finish: T1
2018 Prespring Sun Belt Conference Ranking: 1
Biggest Issue To Fix: Passing Offense
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Linebacker
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Wide Receiver

1. Appalachian State Mountaineers

QB Zac Thomas returns leading a loaded backfield. The O line should be the Sun Belt’s best – or close to it – pounding away for what should be an amazing ground game. Star corner Clifton Duck is leaving early for the NFL, but four of the top five tacklers return and the linebacking corps is loaded.

Final 2018 Record: 11-2 (7-1)
2018 Sun Belt East Finish: T1
2018 Prespring Sun Belt Conference Ranking: 2
Biggest Issue To Fix: Pass Rush
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Offensive Backfield
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Cornerback
