Red Wolves Coaching Staff Suffers Snap of Thanos

Arkansas State Red Wolves coaching staff suffers the snap of Thanos

Less than a week after announcing new subtractions and additions to the offensive coaching staff, the Red Wolves announce significant defections on the defensive side of the ball.

Last Wednesday, Arkansas State head football coach Blake Anderson sat down for an emotional press conference to announce a total revamping of the offensive coaching staff – OC, offensive line, and wide receiver. The very next week, key members of the defensive staff have also left the fold.

Defensive Coordinator Joe Cauthen is leaving for the Houston Cougars, and defensive line coach Brian Early is going with him. Both are original Anderson Era “Original Gangsters,” having arrived to Jonesboro when Anderson took over the sideline from Bryan Harsin.

Also bailing, running back’s coach Norval McKenzie, who accepted a job at Louisville with Scott Satterfied (thanks, Scott).

The coup de grâce? Trooper Taylor, cornerbacks coach and assistant head coach, is headed (reportedly) to Duke.

While losing Cauthon and Early is a huge blow, losing Trooper puts a big hit on Arkansas State’s recruiting ability.

Next Up

Losing what amounts to the majority of the defensive coaching staff is never convenient. But it doesn’t appear Coach Anderson is wasting time. Already rumored:

Duggan comes out of Western Michigan as Assistant Coach – Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers. In 2012, Duggan served as the outline linebackers coach and special teams coordinator with the Tar Heels, which is likely where Blake Anderson and Duggan intersect.

Also making waves in Jonesboro, former Red Wolves superstar and Cincinnati Bengal received a new post:

Perhaps the Red Wolves can convince Demario Davis to leave the Saints to coach linebackers.

Since this story was posted:

  • David Duggan is confirmed as new DC for Blake Anderson and Arkansas State. Duggan had committed to joining former A-State staffer Walt Bell at UMass. Sorry, Walt!
  • On Thursday, Arkansas State announced that Rashad Jackson would take over as running backs coach. Jackson recently served as OC for East Central University in Oklahoma.

We’ll update this page when more information becomes available.
