5. It’s a big, big move for the Buckeyes
Ohio State just got the best recruit in the 2019/2018 Early Signing Period class.
It’s the guy who has all of the tools, all the talent, and all the skills to be every bit the star that Trevor Lawrence became at Clemson this season. It just so happens that Jake Fromm is really good and almost won a national title for Georgia, and he’s a true sophomore.
It’s still a curious move for Fields, who obviously got antsy over the lack of immediate playing time in Athens.
If there weren’t the outside circumstances regarding the alleged racial slur yelled at him – more on that in a moment – he could’ve stuck it out for one more year. He would’ve been given some work here and there, would’ve been the sure-thing star had Fromm suffered an injury, and he might have been the starter in 2020 if Fromm decided to leave early.
The first time around, Penn State had Fields before losing him to Georgia. Now, Ohio State seemed like the better fit for who Fields is and what he can do.
As great as Dwayne Haskins was and is, he wasn’t an RPO guy. He’s not a runner, and that’s what Ohio State likes out of its quarterbacks.
Now, it has a player who can run almost as well as JT Barrett, and potentially throw almost as well as Haskins. But …
