Dana Holgorsen has left West Virginia for Houston Who are the five top replacement options to take over?
It’s one of the most interesting and unprecedented coaching moves in a long, long time.
Dana Holgorsen left West Virginia and is off to Houston, where he’ll be expected to not just win right away, but win really, really big.
So with all that in mind, here are five names that athletic director Shane Lyons should probably take a look at.
Keep in mind one key thing – the program isn’t thinking small here. With assistance and guidance from Jeremy Simon, publisher of WVUwire.com …
5. Mike Norvell, Memphis head coach
In a perfect world, West Virginia goes after UCF head man Josh Heupel, but that buyout … $10 million is too rich. USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury would be the other top option, but … he’s falling up very, very quickly into either the Trojan head coaching job or the NFL.
Norvell has the offensive-minded coaching skill set to step right in and keep the Mountaineer attack rocking. The goal might be to look at a guy with a little more on the defensive side, but in this league, if you can’t hang with the Oklahomas and Oklahoma States of the world, there’s a problem.
Norvell, though, isn’t likely as interested in this gig as it might appear. He’ll be fine in Memphis, and with one more big season, his stock will be through the roof.
