Fearless predictions for all of the top 25 college basketball games for Wednesday, January 23
Fearless Predictions Results So Far
Tennessee (16-1) at Vanderbilt (9-8)
Game Time: 7:00 ET
TV Network: ESPN2
Can Tennessee handle life as the No. 1 team? On a 12-game winning streak, the Vols should have an easy time against a struggling Vanderbilt team on a five-game losing run.
Tennessee is doing it by moving the ball around as well as anyone in the SEC, not turning the ball over, and hitting everything from the field. Vanderbilt can score, too – it’s not afraid to jack up shots from outside – but they don’t force mistakes, and the Vols won’t give up easy points. Even at home, Vandy won’t be able to keep this close.
Prediction: Tennessee 83, Vanderbilt 67
Line: Tennessee -10.5, o/u: 149.5
Georgia (9-8) at LSU (14-3)
Game Time: 7:00 ET
TV Network: SEC Network
Georgia has lost three straight and four of the last five, and LSU has won seven in a row, mostly without a problem. With a big string of road games coming up, the Tigers can’t biff this.
LSU is great at taking the ball away, and Georgia is all too happy at giving it away. The Bulldogs are great at blocking shots, and little else. There’s not enough scoring pop to overcome all of the mistakes. The Tigers will roll with ease with a whole slew of easy transition points.
Prediction: LSU 88, Georgia 69
Line: LSU -11.5, o/u: 151
East Carolina (8-9) at Houston (18-1)
Game Time: 8:00 ET
TV Network: ESPN3
On a three-game losing streak and with four losses in the last five. East Carolina needs a huge win to turn its season around in a hurry. That’s a problem against a hot Houston team that won three straight after losing at Temple two weeks ago.
East Carolina can’t shoot well enough from the outside. It guards well, and it’s not bad on the boards, but Houston is too good on the defensive boards – the Pirates won’t get enough second chances. ECU is okay on D, Houston is great. This will be over at halftime.
Prediction: Houston 78, East Carolina 65
Line: Houston -19, o/u: 136.5
DePaul (11-6) at Marquette (16-3)
Game Time: 8:30 ET
TV Network: FS1
Marquette is on a roll with only one loss since Thanksgiving and winning five straight, all in the Big East. DePaul has been competitive, and it has a splashy road win on the resume from a few weeks ago – beating St. John’s on the road – but this would be terrific with the schedule not easing up over hotel next two weeks.
The Blue Demons can’t hit from the outside, but they’re fantastic on the boards and they’re great at second chance points. That’s a problem against a Marquette team that leads the Big East in defensive rebounds. The Golden Eagles will win on the line and by limiting DePaul’s easy points.
Prediction: Marquette 77, DePaul 69
Line: Marquette -10, o/u: 150.5
Colorado State (7-11) at Nevada (18-1)
Game Time: 11:00 ET
TV Network: CBS Sports Network
It’s been a rough run for a Colorado State team that lost six of its last eight games, and now has to deal with a Nevada squad on a four game winning streak after getting blown out by New Mexico.
0-5 on the year on the road, the Rams have the firepower from the outside, and they’re great at hitting the boards, but they don’t force enough mistakes and don’t do enough defensively to match up with the high-powered Wolf Pack. Nevada will match the Rams shot for shot from the outside and won’t turn it over enough to give up easy points.
Prediction: Nevada 81, Colorado State 70
Line: Nevada -19.5, o/u: 149.5
