College Basketball Top 25 Fearless Predictions: Saturday, January 19

Kansas (15-2) at West Virginia (8-9)

Game Time: 2:00 ET
TV Network: ESPN

West Virginia hasn’t been able to get going, losing five straight in a brutal 0-5 Big 12 start. Now it has to try changing its season around against … Kansas. With Tennessee coming up the following Saturday, things aren’t getting easier for a Mountaineer team with a struggling defense.

The Jayhawks might not be the dominant force of the last several years, but it’s rock-solid from the field and it’s terrific at pressuring the ball. WVU has the Big 12’s worst offense, turning it over way too often. It’ll bomb away, but it won’t be enough.

Prediction: Kansas 81, West Virginia 68
Line: Kansas -5, o/u: 149.5

NC State (14-3) at Notre Dame (11-6)

Game Time: 2:00 ET
TV Network: ACC Network

With losses in three of its last four games, Notre Dame’s season is quickly falling into the abyss. Keeping NC State spiraling down – the Wolfpack have lost two of their last three games – is a big deal for an Irish team that has Virginia up the following week. If State loses, it’s uh-oh time with the Cavaliers and Virginia Tech up next.

The Irish are great at bombing away and even better at blocking shots, but the NC State defense forces a whole slew of big mistakes and is great at getting on the move. It’ll be a fun back-and-forth game with the Irish winning on the free throw line.

Prediction: Notre Dame 79, NC State 76
Line: NC State -2, o/u: 153

Indiana (12-5) at Purdue (11-6)

Game Time: 2:00 ET
TV Network: FOX

Everything was rolling right along for Indiana, but it has lost three straight including a disastrous clunker against Nebraska. On the other side, Purdue has won five of its last six games, stepping up its game in big performances against Iowa and Wisconsin.

The Hoosiers might be hitting well on the inside and on the transition, but they don’t hit from three, and Purdue does. The Boilermakers’ biggest issue is its three-point defense, and that’s not a concern against this IU team. Purdue will hit the big shots that IU won’t.

Prediction: Purdue 78, Indiana 72
Line: Purdue -7, o/u: 143.5

Wake Forest (8-8) at Virginia Tech (14-2)

Game Time: 4:00 ET
TV Network: ACC Network

Wake Forest overcame a rough stretch with a shocker of an upset over NC State, but now it has to deal with a strong Virginia Tech team that ran into a Virginia buzzsaw. The Hokie defense don’t make mistakes and they’re brilliant from threes when they need to be. Wake Forest gives the ball away way too much and don’t move the ball crisply enough to handle what Virginia Tech’s D will bring in a dominant bounce-back performance.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 80, Wake Forest 66
Line: Virginia Tech -17.5, o/u: 142

NEXT: Kentucky (13-3) at Auburn (13-3)
Virginia (16-0) at Duke (14-2)
Texas Tech (15-2) at Baylor (10-6)
Oklahoma (13-4) at Texas (10-7)
