The 2019 pre-spring rankings and depth chart lookahead and projections for the ACC.

ACC COASTAL

7. Duke Blue Devils

There’s a big redo on the offense that loses QB Daniel Jones early to the NFL and the four top receivers. However, Deon Jackson and all of the top running backs return, and the line is okay with three starters back.

Losing tackling-machine Joe Giles-Harris to the NFL is painful, but only two of the top 20 tacklers are done. All four starters are back up front in the 4-2-5 alignment, and everyone returns in the secondary.

Final 2018 Record: 8-5 (3-5)
2018 ACC Coastal Finish: 6
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 13
Biggest Issue To Fix: Picking Off Passes
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Defensive Line

6. North Carolina Tar Heels

Mack Brown has a veteran team to take over – now everyone has to be better. He loses Anthony Ratliff-Williams early to the NFL, but all of the other top receivers are back. The top four running backs return, there are options at quarterback, and even with OT William Sweet leaving early, the line should be fine.

The defensive interior is bulked up and the secondary is full of veterans. The top three top tacklers are gone, but the next six leading tacklers are back. Both kickers have to be replaced.

Final 2018 Record: 2-9 (1-7)
2018 ACC Coastal Finish: 7
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 10
Biggest Issue To Fix: Downfield Passing Game
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Wide Receiver
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Kicker and Punter

5. Pitt Panthers

Was 2018 the culmination of what Pat Narduzzi was building? Maybe, considering the rehab job needing to be done. QB Kenny Pickett is back, but the running back tandem of Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall is done, and four starters are finished on the line. The receiving corps, though, is solid.

Three of the top five tacklers are gone, but the secondary has a few good parts and the line doesn’t need a total redo. Rashad Weaver will be one of the ACC’s top pass rushers.

Final 2018 Record: 7-7 (6-2)
2018 ACC Coastal Finish: 1
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 9
Biggest Issue To Fix: Downfield Passing Game
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Wide Receivers
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Offensive Line

4. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

With new head coach Geoff Collins changing around the offense, he needs the parts to go from the triple-option to a read-option attack. It starts with the quarterback situation – a grad transfer would be a big help – but there are options.

Most of the top running backs return, but the receivers have to prove they can produce. The O needs a tight end, and that’s where UConn transfer Tyler Davis needs to step in. The line should be terrific with four starters returning.

The top three and four of the top six tacklers are gone, but the linebacking corps should be fine. The line suffers the biggest hit, losing all the starters from last year’s front three.

Final 2018 Record: 7-6 (5-3)
2018 ACC Coastal Finish: 2
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 6
Biggest Issue To Fix: Pass Rush
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Running Backs
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Defensive Line

3. Virginia Tech Hokies

It’s been a rough offseason. Ryan Willis is back at quarterback, but Josh Jackson is transferring along with receiver Eric Kumah and TE Chris Cunningham. Not helping matters is the loss of leading rusher Steven Peoples, along with three starters up front. Fortunately, Damon Hazelton is a top target to work around.

The young defensive line gets back three starters, but loses tackle Ricky Walker. The young linebacking corps returns intact – but now it has to tackle someone – and the secondary gets everyone back.

Final 2018 Record: 6-7 (4-4)
2018 ACC Coastal Finish: T3
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 4
Biggest Issue To Fix: Run Defense
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Defensive Back
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Running Back

2. Virginia Cavaliers

Starting with QB Bryce Perkins, the Virginia offense has a star to run the attack. A new top running back has to emerge, and a No. 1 target has to show up with Olamide Zaccheaus gone, but Hasise Dubois and the receiving corps should be fine. Three starters are back up front.

Top defender Chris Peace is done from the linebacking corps, but six of the top seven players on the defensive front seven return. Losing S Juan Thornhill is tough – he was the team’s leading tackler – but eight of the top ten tacklers return.

Final 2018 Record: 8-5 (4-4)
2018 ACC Coastal Finish: T3
2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 14
Biggest Issue To Fix: Tackles For Loss
Biggest Depth Chart Positive: Defensive Front Seven
Biggest Depth Chart Negative: Running Back

1. Miami Hurricanes

Manny Diaz has an interesting team returning. The defense is all set, even with the loss of DE Joe Jackson early to the NFL. If the linebacking corps isn’t the best in the country, it’ll be in the team photo with all of the stars returning. The secondary, though, has to find three new starting parts.

And then there’s the offense. Ohio State QB transfer Tate Martell is eligible to play right away, and he has the receivers to improve the passing attack right away. Not only did Jeff Thomas return after saying he’d transfer to Illinois, but the Canes get Buffalo star wideout KJ Osborn transferring in. Top back Travis Homer is gone, but there are a few decent rushing options. The line has to do its job and be stronger despite the loss of three starters.

2018 Prespring ACC Conference Ranking: 2
Biggest Issue To Fix: Passing Game
