Why Duke Will Win The Walk-On’s Independence Bowl
– QB Daniel Jones and the passing game have to get going early on. When the Blue Devils click through the air and throw a ton of touchdown passes, they win. Duke there three touchdown passes or more six times and went 5-1, only losing the wild shootout to Pitt. Temple’s secondary is good, but it had problems against the teams that could throw, giving up three scoring passes or more five times, going 4-1.
– The Blue Devils aren’t going to beat themselves, at least they’re not going to get nailed with dumb penalties. They were only flagged four times per game for 35 yards, and they aren’t that bad at hanging on to the ball. There were four awful games full of turnovers, but there were just five turnovers in the other eight games. On the flip side, Temple gets hit hard by flags, committing close to eight penalties for 73 yards per game. And …
– Temple likes to throw interceptions. They were spread out – for the most part – but the Owls give up a whole bunch of picks with 15 on the year including two or more four times. Usually, the team was able to overcome the mistakes, but for a Duke secondary that doesn’t come up with enough big plays, generating two interceptions would be a big deal.
