Utah State beat North Texas 52-13 to win the New Mexico Bowl. Five thoughts and analysis of the win, and what does it all mean?
5. Mason Fine’s hamstring injury
North Texas star quarterback Mason Fine suffered an apparent hamstring injury and took a big pop to get knocked out of the game. He tried to come back, and he just couldn’t go.
And that was the ball game.
Fine completed 8-of-12 passes for 59 yards, but it was that nine-yard run that ended up ending your 2018 New Mexico Bowl.
Backup Quinn Shanbour gave it the old college try filling in for the main man, but he simply couldn’t get the job done, completing 2-of-8 passes for 24 yards and three picks, and he couldn’t get the running game going, either. Kason Martin came in after the outcome was well decided and was strong – he hit 7-of-12 passes – but this just stinks.
Fine is a terrific player, and he’ll get his shot next season as he returns to rip up the passing stats. It’s a shame that this was going to be his moment and his game to try to pull off something big, and he got hit with a bad break.
