5. Oh COME ON, Northern Illinois
Death, taxes, and Northern Illinois in bowl games.
It’s not just that the Huskies keep losing bowl games under head coach Rod Carey – it’s that they’re getting obliterated in them.
This makes it six bowl losses in a row for the program with only one of them – the 21-14 loss to Utah State in the 2013 Poinsettia – even remotely close. The six bowl losses – going back to beating Arkansas State in your 2011 GoDaddy.com – were by a total of 232-81, or an average of around 39-14.
There’s a disconnect here.
The Huskies beat BYU on the road, hung around against Florida State, blasted Toledo, and pushed Utah a bit. In all, they beat five teams that went bowling, and, of course, shocked Buffalo in the MAC Championship. But when it comes to these bowl things, the team simply doesn’t show up.
This is a great program, Carey is a terrific head coach, and NIU is a model for Group of Five consistency and success. But …
