2. This really is a step forward for Cal

The defense was a bear – some pun intended – just enough to get to a bowl game, and it was able to keep the team and the game alive by holding down the TCU offense on drive after drive. 

The offense gave it a shot, but lost its mojo after RB Patrick Laird went out, and the good drives weren’t there thanks to all of the picks.

But this is a loaded team full of experience coming back, Justin Wilcox is a terrific head coach, and the needle is pointing up for a program that’s not used to doing the bowl thing lately.

No, it wasn’t a pretty picture, but it was a step.
